What we think of as yoga today is actually just one small part of a system developed in India over 3500 years ago. In Sanskrit, “yoga” means “yoking” or “oneness” a reference to the desire of ancient sages to unite the body, mind, and spirit into a cohesive whole. Yoga poses (asanas) are one of eight components that the sages implemented to attain this unity. Combined with specific breathing techniques (pranayama), the poses were designed to open energy channels in the body and allow energy (prana) to flow freely.
For modern practitioners, yoga has a variety of meanings. While for many the practice is deeply spiritual, for others it is simply a low-impact form of exercise and a way to increase flexibility. Still others practice yoga to deepen and understand the connection that exists between the body and the mind. Yoga is not a religion. Today it is practiced by individuals from all backgrounds and belief systems.
A regular yoga practice has been shown to ease stress and improve relaxation, to improve both body image and body awareness, even to aid physiological problems like depression and substance addiction. On a purely physical level, yoga postures improve balance and coordination, increase flexibility and muscular endurance, and aid in both the prevention and repair of injuries
A typical yoga class will include time exclusively for breathing work and relaxation, with most class time devoted to instruction in a variety of yoga poses. The categories and difficulty of the poses performed will depend on the type of class and the ability levels of students attending.

Meditation is a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the conditioned, thinking mind into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness.  It often involves turning attention to a single point of reference or spiritual center. Meditation has been practiced by people of all religions for over 5, 000years. However, it is practiced outside religious traditions as well.
Meditation is an extremely beneficial discipline that encompasses a wide range of spiritual and/or psychophysical practices which emphasize various goals- everything from achieving a higher state of consciousness, to greater focus, creativity or self-awareness, or simply a more relaxed and peaceful frame of mind (Wikepedia).
There are different meditative practices, all of which have one thing in common-they all focus on quieting the busy mind. The intention is not to remove stimulation but rather direct your concentration to one healing element, whether it be a sound, word, image or one’s breath.  When the mind is filled with the feeling of calmness and peace it cannot take on worry, stress or depression (
www.1stholistic.com).
Two different types of meditation practices are concentrative meditation and mindfulness meditation. Classes at Healing Hands Chiropractic will combine both of these disciplines into a comprehensive meditative practice that students can practice outside of class.  Concentrative meditation focuses the attention on the breath, an image, or a sound (mantra), in order to still the mind and allow a greater awareness and clarity to emerge.  Mindfulness meditation involves opening the attention to become aware of the continuously passing parade of sensations and feelings, images, thoughts, sounds, smells, and so forth without becoming involved in thinking about them.
Some physical benefits of meditation are better sleep, lowered levels of the stress hormones, reduction of cancer causing free- radicals, decreased high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and easier breathing. Psychological benefits include increased brain wave coherence for better creativity, moral reasoning and higher IQ; decreased anxiety, depression, irritability and moodiness; and increased emotional stability.

Ward Off Ear Infections Naturally This Year

Posted by: Dr. Jessica L. Caruso

According to a recent article in the Ladies Home Journal, 35% of ALL visits to the pediatrician in the United States are for reoccurring ear infections. Sometimes these ear infections are due to bacteria and other times they are due to viruses. Well, then why is the same course of treatment [antibiotics] used for both ‘causes’?

Research and statistics are showing an alarming overuse of antibiotics, leading to super -resistant bacteria which in turn leads to future infections and eventually…TUBES. This surgical approach to ‘treat’ reoccurring infections has miniscule long term results since the tubes placed in the child’s ear often come out and usually require the child to be put under general anesthesia in order to perform the surgery.

Ear pain is the number one reason for child visits to chiropractors. Many chiropractors believe that there is a strong link between the birthing process and recurrent ear infection, also known as otitis media. During the birthing process, cervical (neck) vertebrae can become misaligned, disrupting nerve function, which can affect the eustachian tube. This may lead to fluid buildup in the middle ear and cause otitis media. Misalignments left untreated can irritate the nerves and eventually disrupt the body’s ability to function properly. The purpose of a chiropractic adjustment is to help to restore the normal functioning of the nervous system so the body can heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. (www.chiropracticresearch.org)

The article in the Ladies Home Journal states, “Chiropractic care is thought to prevent recurrent infections by correcting misalignments (called subluxations) and allowing normal fluid drainage from the middle ear.” What the article took special note of was that 6 months after the chiropractic care was given to the children in the study, 80 percent had not suffered a recurrence of ear infections.

Eighty (80%) percent sure sounds like a better alternative than putting a child under anesthesia for a surgical procedure that has little long term effects.

The Perfect Gift: Presence

Posted by: Jenny Everett King, CYT

“What did we ever do before cell phones?” How many times have you found yourself in that conversation? Do you get annoyed if the person you’re texting doesn’t get back to you for more than an hour? Or how about the terrible lack of control we feel if the internet is down for a day? We are a society who wants our information NOW. We don’t want to wait and we don’t want to wonder.

Communications technology has only grown in convenience in recent years. A few years ago, we could check email on our own computers at home. Now we can access a remote email server from any computer with an internet connection. Answering machines are thing of the past – now we dial in to our voicemail from any phone, be it a cell or a landline.

As the wife of a police officer, I am the first person to appreciate the fact that we can usually contact one another at any time of the day or night, from any location. As a working mother, I love that I can accomplish many office tasks from home. And as an impatient multi-tasker, I love that I can do it all right away, and all at once.

But as a yoga practitioner and teacher, I have to question some of the “advantages” technology has brought us.

I start each yoga class that I teach by reminding my students to be wholly present. “Presence” refers to both time and space. To be present means to not only let go of the past and the future, but to also let go of things happening currently, apart from you. In other words, forget about emails being sent while you are away from your computer, voicemails being left while your phone is off, television shows being broadcast even if you forgot to Tivo them.

In our culture, presence is no easy task. We just aren’t used to it. We might be able to do it in yoga for an hour or so – if we really, really try – but what about the rest of the time? There is a legendary saying of Buddha, quoted by therapist Mike George in 1001 Meditations, that goes, “As you walk and eat and travel, be where you are. Otherwise you will miss most of your life.”

Which brings me to my confession: One day last week, I breastfed my son while reading my email and paying bills online. An admirable act of multi-tasking, perhaps. But when he was finished, I realized that I had held my son for 15 minutes and barely looked into his eyes.

Granted, this example is an isolated incident and perhaps a little extreme. But have you ever found yourself in a similar situation – so caught up in the things you could put off for 15 minutes that you miss the more important things happening right now? I believe that this conflict has only grown with the advancements in technology. We can now “manage” all aspects of our lives (or at least attempt to) from nearly any location at any time of day. The temptation to continuously manage our lives is even greater at this time of year, when most of us have twice as many commitments.

As we approach the holiday season, my suggestion is this: Be present. As you eat Thanksgiving dinner and shop for gifts and decorate your home, as you drive to work and schedule your chiropractic appointment and squeeze in a few moments for a yoga practice, be where you are. Otherwise you may miss most of your holidays!

Believe in Breastfeeding

Posted by: Jenny Everett King, CYT

The cover of a well-known magazine this week featured a well-known actress performing a well-known activity: breastfeeding her child. Now, just like when another magazine’s cover portrayed a breastfeeding mother and baby in 2006, people have complained. There are, apparently, many adults and teenagers who are uncomfortable with images of nursing mothers.

Breastfeeding is one of the few practices left in our culture that is inherently natural. It also happens to be healthy for both mother and baby (physically and emotionally), convenient, and economical. (Stressed about the expense of having a baby in the current economy? Breastfeed, and you could save thousands of dollars a year!) Most of us know, intellectually, that breastfeeding is the ideal means of infant nutrition. Yet many still don’t like to see it in action.

Consequently, many breastfeeding mothers feel uncomfortable nursing their babies in public. Numerous women have commented, “I just don’t want to make anyone else feel awkward.” A mother may not mind being seen nursing her baby, but still mind the disapproving looks she gets for doing so. The majority of restaurants, shopping malls, and airports do not offer an area that is comfortable, clean, private, and otherwise appropriate for breastfeeding. Many women feel that they are left with a choice between hygiene and privacy . (Public restrooms are very often not an option. )

If we as a culture truly believe in the benefits of breastfeeding for all babies, then we must show our support for nursing mothers. We should encourage them to feed their babies in the area where they are most comfortable, physically and emotionally. We certainly should never make them feel awkward or embarrased.

At Healing Hands, we offer a comfortable and private sitting area where we invite women to breastfeed. However, mothers are welcome to feed their babies wherever they prefer in our office. We believe that both mother and baby benefit immeasurably from the act of breastfeeding, and we are committed to encouraging this aspect of natural health and well-being.
