Manchester, NH Chiropractor Moves To Sliding Scale Fee Model

Convenience, savings and industry trends prompt change for Healing Hands Community Chiropractic

Manchester, New Hampshire – Healing Hands Community Chiropractic, a wellness-focused chiropractic practice for men, women and children located at 195 McGregor Street, is shifting its payment model to a sliding scale and will no longer accept health insurance effective May 1. The change aims to make care more affordable and convenient for patients by charging what they can afford, and more efficient for the practice by requiring less time for processing claims – allowing more time for patients.

“Some of our patients who were in pain and needed care were withholding it because of insurance restrictions. This runs counter to our philosophy of providing consistent and preventive care, and led us to move to a simpler and more affordable model,” said Brian Caruso, the office’s business manager and cofounder. “By charging what people can afford, we’re making it possible for them to be proactive with their preventative care and alleviate problems before they begin.”

He added that the change will allow staff to spend less time working through insurance claim issues and more time on actual care. The new fee structure will allow patients to pay what they can from $20 to $40 a regular office visit with the office’s chiropractor, Dr. Jessica Caruso (or Dr. Jess to her patients), who has practiced in New Hampshire for 10 years.

Chiropractic medicine is a healthcare discipline that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, and the symptoms that disturbances in these systems can create. Dr. Jess practices community and family style chiropractic care and is certified in the Webster Technique for treating expecting mothers and babies. She was voted Top Alternative & Complementary Health Care Doctor 2015 by the readers of New Hampshire Magazine, and has won Parenting NH Magazine’s Family Favorite Chiropractor award for the last three years.

“We see entire families who consider chiropractic care an important part of their health routines,” Dr. Caruso said. “Our office practices community style care, so we welcome children to come and play with other kids while their parents are getting adjusted; adults can relax with a cup of tea in our open concept office while they enjoy views of the Merrimack River and the downtown Manchester skyline. We strive to provide our patients with an office space that is inspiring, open and friendly.”

The Carusos are a husband and wife team who co-own the Mill West practice and also work out of the practice’s sister office in Portsmouth, which has been operating under the sliding scale payment model for several years. The success there, along with encouragement from other local alternative healthcare providers who have adopted this model, were contributing factors to the payment shift. But the true impetus for the change is the goal of improving the health of people in the greater Manchester community through access to quality chiropractic care to anyone who wants it.

“The best decision that I’ve ever made for my health is starting chiropractic care,” said Joyce Archer, who has been treated by Dr. Caruso for the last year. “My symptoms are improved, I’m sleeping better, and regular appointments with Dr. Jess help address any issues before they become health problems.”

Caruso discovered chiropractic healthcare while recovering from a car accident caused by a drunk driver in 1996. Inspired by the positive results of holistic and wellness-centered treatment, she gave up her forensic studies degree for a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. The memory of that first chiropractic experience stuck with her.

“People would come in with pain, and leave well,” she said. “As a student, it was cost prohibitive to have regular appointments with my chiropractor, so I got a job as a receptionist at a chiropractor’s office to experience office operations and receive free care as a benefit. And now as a self-employed, high-deductible health insurance policyholder, I understand firsthand the difficult choices families make when it comes to healthcare.”

Now, the Carusos and their two-year-old son, who live in Manchester, are building upon community connections to share their story with city residents. They’ve adopted two parks in Manchester’s West Side, are active members of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Intown Manchester, Manchester Young Professionals’ Network, and volunteer with several local and statewide groups. They’re holding a family-friendly open house from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, May 1 to celebrate the new payment model with music, snacks, a ribbon cutting by the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, and raffles to benefit the NH Food Bank.

Vertebral Subluxation & Nerve Chart

Vertebral subluxation and nerve chart

Why should everyone be getting adjusted?  Because it’s ALL CONNECTED.  A subluxation, or misalignment in the spine, can cause malfunctions in the body and lead to dis-ease.  The reason why Chiropractors’ job is to remove subluxations is to open up the communication in the body to help the body heal itself and ‘run on all cylinders’.

Additionally, an adjustment helps instantly relieve stress!  Isn’t that a good enough reason to come in regularly?

The nervous system controls and coordinates all organs and structure of the human body. Misalignment of the spinal vertebrae and discs may cause irritation to the nervous system which could affect the structures, organs, and functions listed under “area” and the “possible symptoms” that are associated with malfunctions of the areas noted.vertebral_subluxation_nerve_chart

The Benefits of Animal Reiki

by Guest Blogger Kristin Harrison, RMT, LMT

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy healing technique that all animals can benefit from. It is safe, effective and can do no harm. Reiki balances the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of an animal by releasing energy blockages which create imbalance and disease. When an animal’s energy is balanced and flowing, healing and change occur. Animals respond quickly to the ease that Reiki produces on these levels, often harmonizing seemingly difficult and impossible attitudes and
conditions.

Reiki addresses the root cause of acute or chronic conditions, adapts to the natural needs of the animal, heals holistically, and can be used as preventative and or maintenance care. Animals decide how much Reiki they want to accept and for how long. They determine where they want the Reiki to help them, either physically, emotionally or both. However, Reiki is not a replacement for appropriate veterinarian medical care. Reiki supports medical care by accelerating healing, reducing pain or discomfort, and stimulating the healing process.

Reiki enhances overall well-being

Just like people, even healthy pets can have occasional physical, emotional and mental imbalances that, if left untreated, can manifest as illness. Reiki helps balance out emotions such as fear, anxiety, aggression, depression, and other behaviorally based issues. Periodic Reiki treatments can help maintain your pet’s natural state of well-being and balance.

Reiki accelerates healing following surgery or illness

Reiki can alleviate and prevent side effects of conventional medications such as prescriptions and antibiotics, and provides pain relief and relaxation to facilitate and enhance the body’s natural healing response.

Reiki increases trust and bonding between you and your pet

People and pets often mirror each other’s physical and emotional states. Animals are natural healers and sometimes take on their person’s problems, often in an attempt to heal them. This happens because of the deep bond shared between a pet and his or her person. Because of the shared energy in such a close relationship, energetic imbalances are shared as well. For optimum healing, joint treatments for people and their pets can often be beneficial.

Reiki assists with behavior issues by promoting relaxation and stress reduction

Many behavior issues are caused by stress. Reiki has a calming effect on the pet and may help make the pet more receptive to training and behavior modification. Reiki is extremely beneficial for animals with a history of abuse, especially those in shelter care. The gentle touch and the energy can help restore trust in animals who have learned to associate touch with being hurt. Reiki can also help with transitions such as moving house, introduction to, or loss of, another pet. Reiki helps to heal the spirit, bringing animals back to a state of trust and connection, giving a sense of purpose and building their confidence with other animals and people. Reiki helps balance out emotions such as fear, anxiety, aggression, depression, and other behaviorally based issues.

Reiki strengthens the immune system for cancer therapies

Cancer therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation present stress to an already compromised immune system. Reiki strengthens the immune system to better deal with this additional stress. It helps alleviate or prevent the side effects of conventional cancer treatments and provides pain relief.

Reiki provides comfort and relieves pain, anxiety and fear for animals in hospice.

Reiki is a wonderful way to facilitate the transition for terminally ill animals and their owners. Often, animals will not allow themselves to transition because they intuitively feel that their person is not ready to let them go. Joint Reiki treatments for the pet and his or her person can help both through this difficult time by enhancing the bond and allowing a gentle transition.

And most importantly, Reiki makes your special animal companion feel loved and at peace.
